Summer Programs and Internships
What programs are available in the summer?
There are many summer programs available all over the world. You can visit the following websites to search for programs and internships abroad: AIFS, Arcadia, CIEE, CIS, IES, IFSA, ISA, KEI, SIT, USAC. You can also visit the study abroad websites at other colleges and universities to search for the summer programs that they offer. These summer programs are often open to all students, not just their own students. Can I earn academic credit for a summer program completed abroad?
Yes, as long as the program allows you to earn a minimum of 4 U.S. semester credits that can be transferred back to New College by way of an official transcript sent to the New College Office of the Registrar. The 4 U.S. semester credits can transfer back to New College as either a Summer ISP (that will count as one of your three required ISPs) or as one unit toward your New College degree. These two options should be discussed with your academic advisor.
If you choose the Summer ISP option, you will need to submit the following by May 1st:
-Summer ISP Description form due in the Office of the Registrar by May 1st, prior to completing the program. A Summer ISP can be fulfilled only through transferable credit from an accredited college or university, with completion at that host institution of 4 or more semester credit hours (or 6 or more quarter credit hours) with grade(s) of C or higher (or the equivalent). It is therefore essential, in the case of a program abroad, to confirm that the transcript that will be issued will be accepted by the New College Registrar. Please contact Florence Zamsky at fzamsky@ncf.edu for more information.
-Off-campus study/study abroad forms and documents. You can submit these forms electronically by searching for the program that you will be participating in. For example, if you plan to study in Shanghai with CET in the summer, use the Simple Search page and enter "Program: CET - City: Shanghai - Term: Summer." This will take you, through a clickable link, to the CET page for this particular program. Click on APPLY NOW to create an OCS/SA application that will display the forms and documents you need to complete and submit electronically.
If you choose to transfer the credits back as a unit toward your New College degree, you will need to submit the following, no later than May 1st:
-The Petition for Preliminary Approval of Transfer Credit form needs to be submitted to the Office of the Registrar. Again, it is essential to confirm that the program carries a minimum of 4 U.S. semester credits and that the transcript that will be issued upon completion of the program will be accepted by the New College Registrar. Please contact Florence Zamsky at fzamsky@ncf.edu for more information.
-Off-campus study/study abroad forms and documents. You can submit these forms electronically by searching for the program that you will be participating in. For example, if you plan to participate in the SIT Counseling and Humanitarian Action Internship summer internship program in Amman, Jordan, use the Simple Search page and enter "Program: SIT - City: Amman - Term: Summer." This will take you, through a clickable link, to the SIT page for this particular program. Click on APPLY NOW to create an OCS/SA application that will display the forms and documents you need to complete and submit electronically.
Can I earn academic credit for a summer internship abroad?
If the internship is offered as part of a program that carries a minimum of 4 transferable U.S. semester credits and a transcript from an accredited college or university, it may be completed to earn either a Summer ISP or one unit toward your New College degree. Please follow the steps described above.
Please also report your internship with New College in Handshake, as described on the CEO's Internships webpage.
Can I complete a summer program or internship abroad for my own personal enrichment?
Yes. In that case, if you do not wish to transfer credits back to New College, there are no constraints regarding the number of credits awarded by the program, OCS/SA forms do not need to be submitted, and a transcript is not needed.
Is financial aid available for summer programs?
No. Financial aid is not usually available in the summer but feel free to contact the NCF Financial Aid Office.
Can I participate in an NSE or EcoLeague exchange in the summer?
No. Tuition is paid to New College for these domestic exchange programs. Since New College does not have a summer session, tuition cannot be paid to the college for that term, and an exchange at another participating institution is therefore not possible in the summer.
